Thursday Games ~ Halo 4 (Coming Nov. 6!)

So, as some of my blog readers probably already know (considering they're probably gamers, haha), Halo 4 is due out soon. Specifically, the release date is November 6, 2012; however, you can get the game a little earlier than most by waiting in line at GameStop around midnight with your pre-order receipt.

I know I am!

Coincidentally (or not? :P) there is another game being released exactly a week later, on November 13: the Call of Duty continuation, Black Ops 2. While probably not quite as interesting as Halo, it's still worth a look!

Check out these high definition Halo wallpapers below!

Doctor Who

For all of those readers out there who browse my blog, from college students to grumpy seniors, who don't know about the wonder that is Doctor Who, please just stop everything you are doing at this very moment and find the nearest Netflix account to watch it on!

Hell, you can borrow mine. It's the same account I use for movies and shows, to avoid cleaning my place or studying for classes. :P

Anyhow, this show is actually the longest-running and most successful science fiction series of all time, according to the Guinness Book of World Records. It's not surprising to see why, either -- it's really something to behold. The show was really ahead of its time, but now that we are approaching 50 years of the Doctor, capabilities have met up with potential!

If you're new to the show, or a seasoned TARDIS rider, take a look at these excellent, high definition wallpapers with a Doctor Who theme, and maybe you might even find one you like as much as the show itself -- though, I doubt it. ;]

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (TMNT)

I have decided that from now on, the new Friday category for wallpapers will be Student's Pick, which will feature the random wallpaper-subject choices that I think would be interesting to my fellow college and university student peers. Friday seems the best day since that's when classes are off for the weekend, and we can relax from our tight schedule of studying, learning, and going to the campus!

My choice today is TMNT, or Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. TMNT is a popular franchise that includes toys, comics, television shows, you name it -- a typical 90s-kid fan favorite. Being a 90s kid myself, I'm sure my colleagues are probably similarly acquainted with the franchise (and hopefully similarly enjoy it, as well!).

Check out these HD walls for TMNT in today's Student's Pick (and keep in mind that there are waaaay more TMNT wallpapers available at the album I created for them, which can be found by clicking here to go to imgur):

College & University Campus (for Students!)

As I am sure all of my readers are well-aware, I am a student at a city college hoping for a transfer to study at a university. While I am studying away for my classes, I often find myself on my laptop to research information, to write essays or papers, and to goof off a bit when my mind has been on just one topic for too long!

So, I figure that my laptop should be learning and education friendly while I'm using it at the school, to keep me on track for studying (or, at least, as long as I can stay on track in a cramped city college library!). That brings me to the focus of today's post: college and university campus / logo wallpapers (for students!):

Books & Library HD Wallpapers

Here's something for the academics and the bookworms: some high definition book and library-themed wallpapers. These can be good for a classy, appropriate desktop (such as a more public computer in your house, or in a college / university class room or study).

I find that these sorts of wallpapers can help me study a bit better for my city college classes, since I can get absorbed in the idea of reading and studying! There's about seven of them in total, so be sure to click the "Read more >>" link at the bottom of this post to view all of the wallpapers!

A cozy study, perhaps in a nice university?

Studies don't always have to be organized!

Old binding.

I'm sure there's a pun here..

Tech Tuesday: Steampunk

I think Wikipedia can more accurately describe this than I, a simple and lowly college student, can, so here's an excerpt from their page on Steampunk:

"Steampunk is a sub-genre of science fiction characterized by a setting in which steam power predominates as the energy source for industrial technologies,[1] inspired by industrial civilization during the 19th century.

Typically, therefore, works of steampunk are set in an alternate history of the 19th century's British Victorian era or American "Wild West"; in a post-apocalyptic future during which steam power has regained mainstream usage; or in a fantasy world that similarly employs steam power.

Steampunk perhaps most recognizably features anachronistic technologies or retro-futuristic inventions as people in the 19th century might have envisioned them, and is likewise rooted in this era's perspective on fashion, culture, architectural style, and art. Such technology may include fictional machines like those found in the works of H. G. Wells and Jules Verne."

Resident Evil 5 Steam Gift Giveaway! COMPLETED!

So as I am sure everybody knows by now, the next Resident Evil game in the main series, Resident Evil 6, is due out on October 2 for the Xbox 360 and PS3, and on November 25 for the PC. With the giraffe-getting-a-blowjob-logo game right around the corner, I'm sure there's plenty of people looking to get their hands on Resident Evil 5 beforehand, to get prepped for 6.

So, here's my part to help everyone get in on the Resident Evil fun, even if they can't afford it. As promotion for my site (and because I love you guys), I will be giving away a copy of Resident Evil 5 (PC) as Steam gifts to each of the three lucky winners of this giveaway!

This is for EVERYBODY. All you have to do is comment in this post (it may take up to a couple hours for comments to be approved, but it will be added)! Of course, there is also the small stipulation that you must include your Steam username, so that we can contact you to give the gift. A little flattery wouldn't hurt, either. ;D

However, there are some rules to follow. Do not post more than once to "improve" your odds -- anyone found to be commenting his/her Steam username more than once will be disqualified. In the case that you forget to add your username in your first post, you can add a second one with the username and a brief explanation of the second post. Only the username'd post will be counted.

IMPORTANT: Only Steam usernames that are at least 2 months old will be considered. This is to prevent cheating.

Giveaway ends at 6:00 PM PST (Pacific Standard) on Sept. 30, 2012. It is currently COMPLETED!

If you have any questions, I am available at randall_a on reddit. Thanks for reading!

Zoids

Zoids, know as "Zoido" in Japan, is a massive franchise started by Tomy, a Japanese toy company now operating as Takara-Tomy. The original Zoids were models, much like Transformers were. They're actually pretty cool, since after you build them, you can make many of them walk around or do other cool stuff, thanks to its built-in motorization.

Perhaps the most well-known piece of the franchise is the anime (though, this is definitely arguable). The Zoids anime was successful in both Japan and the United States, garnering show slots on Toonami alongside such popular animes as Dragonball Z and Gundam.

Now these models are often seen as one of many model-building hobbies for college students and the older generation alike.

Gundam!

For those of you who are already aware of what Gundam is (probably college-student nerds much like myself, I suspect), just skip the following description and go straight to the high definition Gundam wallpapers below.

For those of you who are unaware of what Gundam is exactly, read the rest of this post for a brief summary of the book, television, and film series (hint: it has a ton of giant, flying robots in it!) from Wikipedia:

"The Gundam Series (ガンダムシリーズ Gandamu Shirīzu?) is a metaseries of anime created by Sunrise studios that features giant robots (or "mecha") called "Mobile Suits" (MS); usually the protagonist's MS will carry the name Gundam.

The metaseries started on April 7, 1979, as a serial TV show called Mobile Suit Gundam. That first TV series has since spawned a franchise that has come to include works released in numerous media.

Titles have appeared in the form of multiple television series and OVAs, movies, manga, novels and video games, among other modes. The story from the original 1979 series has been considerably extended with sequels, prequels, side stories and alternate timelines.

As a result, the title Gundam has become a collective term for the seven distinct but related timelines that can be pieced together from the stories that appear in the Gundam franchise. Generally speaking, the timelines do not intersect, but they do contain a few common elements such as the titular war machines called Gundam.

However, all Gundam timelines and worlds, long after their own anime series, do eventually intersect and combine in the series Turn A Gundam."

Back to School Wallpapers (College/University Edition)

As August draws to a close, and September lurks just around the corner, college/university students all around the country (and quite possibly the world) are getting ready for new, fall-semester classes. Since I'm sure there's plenty of students who are excited to start classes or get back into campus life, it seems like a good idea to put up some back to school wallpapers.

Unfortunately, it's actually quite a bit harder to find back to school wallpapers than I thought. Cursory searches showed very little that I could actually use! :O So, while we are one short of my usual 5 minimum high definition wallpapers today, I think we'll be able to manage, right? :P

Check out the wallpapers below!

Wednesday Music - School of Rock

Many movie-goers will remember the movie that came out a considerable time ago by the name of School of Rock, starring Jack Black as a comical, totally-not-serious teacher that fills in for a teacher during his/her absence (frankly, I can't remember). After realizing they're a total bore, he whips out the instruments and molds them into rock 'n roll prodigies.

I'm sure the movie made a decent amount of money, and it was an all-around enjoyable movie (which isn't too hard with the lovable Jack Black). Watch it, enjoy it, and if you really liked it that much, then use one of these School of Rock high definition wallpapers!
